Rhinoa's Challenge List

I only read my first short story collections last year (Edgar Allan Poe "Complete Stories and Poems"; Charles de Lint "Waifs and Strays"). I picked out a further 7 collections to read in 2008 for other reading challenges and have added a couple of titles to put me in for options 3&4. My list is:

1) Black Heart, Ivory Bones - Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling
2) Black Thorn, White Rose - Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling
3) Blood Red, Snow White - Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling
4) Ruby Slippers, Golden Tears - Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling
5) Black Swan, White Raven - Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling
6) Silver Birch, Blood Moon - Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling
7) The Ladies of Grace Adieu - Susanna Clarke
8) Bite - Laurell K Hamilton
9) Buring Your Boats - Angela Carter
10) Dates from Hell - Kelley Armstrong

The first six are all collections by different authors edited by Datlow and Windling that are adult re-tellings of fairy tales. The seventh is by the author of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell which I really enjoyed last year. It has a couple of stories that relate to Strange & Norrell and some completely new ones. The last three on the list are just for this challenge and are urban fantasy and fairy tale based again. I know there is a bit of a running theme, but what can I say I like fairy tales and urban fantasy! I haven't read anything by a lot of the authors featured before so I am hoping to discover some new favourites and people I can follow up on.

This is a great list, Rhinoa! I considered Clarke for this challenge, but decided it might be a bit much to take on five or more anthologies so I stuck with my theme three idea. Happy Reading!

I enjoyed The Ladies of Grace Adieu a bunch! How was the de Lint collection you read last year? I just discovered him last year, so I've only read two novels, but I'm super-impressed with him. I'm looking forward to your reviews-I enjoy urban fantasy as well. :)

Thanks Literary Feline.

Eva I read Waifs and Strays last year and my post about it is on my blog here
I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading more by him this year, both short stories and novels. Oh I also read The Blue Girl by him last year which I can recommend too. Which ones have you read so far?
