Greeneyes's Challenge List
I am an avid reader of short stories, so even though this is my first time participating in a challenge, I've decided to complete option #4 and read ten collections by ten authors I've never read before. To be completely honest, I have read individual stories by a few of these authors but not full works, so I think that still counts.
Here's my list:
Sunstroke and Other Stories, by Tessa Hadley
Cliffs of Fall and Other Stories, by Shirley Hazzard
Bring Me Your Saddest Arizona, by Ryan Harty
Shiloh and Other Stories, by Bobbie Ann Mason
Lost in the City, by Edward P. Jones
Drinking Coffee Elsewhere, by ZZ Packer
A Kind of Flying, by Ron Carlson
Corpus Christi: Stories, by Bret Anthony Johnson
Jenny and the Jaws of Life, by Jincy Willett
Laws of Evening, by Mary Yakuri Waters
Winesburg, Ohio, by Sherwood Anderson
As far as what I would recommend to anyone compiling a list (assuming you all haven't read most of these already!), these are books that I've felt compelled to read more than once (or twice...or three times):
Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage, by Alice Munro
Like Life, by Lorrie Moore
Birds of America, by Lorrie Moore
Rare & Endangered Species, by Richard Bausch (contains one of my favorite stories ever, "Tandolfo the Great")
A Relative Stranger, by Charles Baxter
An Amateur's Guide to the Night, by Mary Robison
Monogamy, by Marly Swick
Black Tickets, by Jayne Anne Phillips
At the Gates of the Animal Kingdom, by Amy Hempel
Collected Stories, by Flannery O'Connor (okay, probably a given...)
After the Rain, by William Trevor
The Least You Need to Know, by Lee Martin
I look forward to seeing everyone's lists and discovering even more new writers.
